The opening date of the new Egyptian artifacts exhibit at the De Wolfe Museum drew nearer, and the SSC members began work on their undercover assignments. Alan Quickman believed that Vincent Prize would attempt to steal something from the museum before the new exhibit opened, as a test of their security, and he had devised a clever plan to lull Vincent into complacency. Alan had also decided to let the forged mask and bust of Nefertiti remain on exhibit, even though he could now prove they were forgeries, in order makeTasha complacent too.
Tasha and her entourage, en route to San Francisco, reached Barstow on Route 66, where the older members in the group reminisced about the highway's fascinating history and their youth as hippies. On the way again, they reached the San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Mission. Tasha, in an uncharacteristically serious mood, spent the afternoon at the mission thinking about its history. She entertained lovely fantasies of herself as a beautiful, young and virginal senorita serenaded by handsome men who desired her. This blissful afternoon was disrupted by the appearence of the enigmatic old crone, who materialized out of smoke from an antique Chumash Indian oven and delivered a sinister warning. Not long afterwards, Tasha's surfer dude bodyguard, Sugar Plum, deserted her to go to the Maverick Surf Contest and then on to worldwide surfing.
At the De Wolfe Museum, Alan began to put his plan into action. Without telling anyone, he went undercover as a crude wisecracking plumber who repaired a leak in a Museum bathroom, and acted the part so well he fooled the SSC women. Within an hour after the Museum opened, the power suddenly went off, and in the confusion King Tut's Book of the Dead was stolen. This was part of Alan's plan; he had switched the Book with a fake copy earlier in the day, knowing it would enrage the thief Vincent. In order to test the alertness of the SSC group, Alan did not tell them ahead of time that he had made the switch.
Vincent, accompanied by his employees Sergio Peccato and Cuthbert Cathcart, "cased the joint" for the antique car theft caper by touring the antique auto museum disguised as an elderly man, his son and a male nurse. Vincent pointed out to them which cars he wanted stolen for his foreign clients, and he drooled over the exquisite vehicles: Duesenberg, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Maybach, Cord, Pierce Arrow and others. Later that evening, this diversionary theft was carried out successfully by Sergio and Cuthbert while Vincent pilfered the Book of the Dead from the De Wolfe Museum. As Alan had predicted, Vincent was stunned and furious when he learned he had stolen a fake Book.
Tasha's beauty trade show exhbit at the Moscone Trade Center went very well until she accidentally set the place on fire with the deep fat fryer she was using to prepare the onion rings she gave to visitors. Her major competitor, Lorelei Mallford of Adobe Allure beauty products, watched with satisfaction as Tasha fouled everything up.
Alan, who had done a great deal of painstaking research, now believed he knew what Vincent was really after: King Tut's Fly Wisk, an ornate wooden fan covered in gold leaf and adorned with hunting scenes and ostrich feather plumes. Alan did not know where the Fly Wisk was,
but he believed it was hidden somewhere in the De Wolfe exhibit and that Vincent knew where to find it.
The Egyptian Exhibit opened and the V.I.P. guests entered the hall. Tasha, now freshly made up and resplendent in a gorgeous Egyptian-inspired designer gown, arrived with her entourage and was surrounded by TV reporters and paparazzi. One of her conspirators in the forgeries plot, Professor Cicero Quintus Cassidy, made a florid speech and claimed that the Nefertiti artifacts were genuine and proved Tasha was the Queen's descendent. The reporters drew nearer to get comments from Tasha.
Then Cassidy introduced the exhibit of the child mummies that were intended to highlight Tasha's status as a famous mother. He asked Marcia to open each sarcophagus as the TV cameras rolled. However, to the shock of the museum patrons, each time Marcia opened a sarcophagus, a strange noise or voice came from inside it. The first mummy farted, sending the audience into giggles and Tasha into a panic, and the next four mummies recited short poems that ridiculed Tasha. After that, Tasha was mortified to see her scam exposed and herself made a laughingstock.
The lights went out abruptly and there was a struggle between Alan and Vincent over King Tut's Fly Wisk, which had been concealed inside one of the child mummy sarcophagi. Vincent grabbed the fan and ran upstairs, followed by Alan. They began to fight, using medieval swords from an exhibit. Vincent escaped by injuring Belle when she tried to help Alan, thus distracting Alan; but in the scuffle Vincent dropped the fan, so he left empty-handed. Back home, Alan explained the secret of the talking mummies to the SSC; each one had been sabotaged with a sound recording chip of the type Hans had given him.
Tasha, despondent at the failure of her schemes, changed into a plain dress and began wandering around San Francisco. She visited several exhibits at the California Academy of Sciences and then toured Alcatraz. She met a friendly cab driver, George Kelly, descendent of a famous gangster, and asked him to be her new security guard. Then she tried to fly home to Nevada, but was stopped by airport security because her All Natural Egyptian makeup was radioactive. Garth tried to sell the Neutron Nutria to a Finnish businessman, but the nutria
escaped into the San Francisco Bay. At home, Tasha threw together a last-minute Thanksgiving dinner consisting of Jell-o Jigglers and turkey stuffed with onion rings.
Alan gave Claudia an assignment she dreaded, going to Las Vegas to meet with Hans Richter, whom she despised because he had hurt her sister Beth. She had to work with Hans on the authentication of an Assyrian artifact the De Wolfe Museum wanted to buy. After Hans
determined it was a forgery, they went to his hotel room to discuss it. Claudia tried to make Hans talk about the missing authentic death mask of Nefertiti, but she could not crack him. All the time she had been with him in his room, Claudia had found herself becoming attracted to Hans, but she resisted it and baited him into a fierce argument about Beth The argument escalated into a physical fight, but suddenly he embraced her and started kissing her, and she responded, her anger gone. Hans backed off, and then gave Claudia information about the
mask and his involvement in the underworld organization. He revealed that he was one of the few people who knew what was really going on with the Suleimanite cult, due to his Middle Eastern connections, but he would not discuss it further. He told Claudia he was leaving for Dubai and then going on to Europe for an extended period of time. They parted as friends.
Meanwhile, Beth, unaware of this meeting, had been busy in San Francisco reinventing herself, defiantly having her long hair cut short and buying all new clothes as part of her effort to forget Hans. Claudia was saddened, but understood Beth's reaction. She decided not to tell Beth what had just happened wth Hans.
Alan and the SSC members prepared a surprise Thanksgiving dinner for Erika's faithful housekeeper Beryl. The next morning, Alan informed them that their new assignment was in Arizona. Without elaboration, he told them to start packing.
